By Madlen Davies for MailOnline. This revolting video shows a woman having her blackheads squeezed and reams of sebum swirling out. The young woman, who is unidentified, is lying on her back, being filmed having the spots on her nose excavated.

The camera zooms in on her face, showing visible pores, as her nose is pressed with tissues.

As her skin is squeezed, streams of thin, stringy sebum emerge from her pores, curling as they are pushed out. But commenting on the video, a dermatologist told MailOnline squeezing blackheads at home in this way can lead to scarring and red, inflamed skin. The two-and-a-half-minute video, which has been viewed nearly 10, times, was uploaded to the Australian YouTube channel Dr GuruS2.

MailOnline contacted the Dr Guru account for clarification on whether the blackhead extractions were performed by a dermatologist. It has now emerged the they were not - but a spokesman claimed the person administering the treatment has a 'friend who is'. Then, the procedure is repeated on a different part of the woman's nose, expunging yet more sebum. The film ends showing the woman's nose continuing to be squeezed. Blackheads occur when hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells.

When the body produces too much oil, known as sebum, it can combine with dead skin cells and build up in the follicle. When the oil is exposed to the air at the surface of the skin, it turns brown, creating a dark 'plug' in the pore. Bacteria can thrive in this environment, and the spot can become inflamed.

It may bulge and become a whitehead, or if the plug is open to the surface it may darken, causing a blackhead - which looks as though there is a speck of dirt in the spot. But Dr Emma Wedgeworth, a consultant dermatologist and spokesperson for the British Skin Foundation, warned squeezing blackheads in this way can lead to scarring.

Nor does it address the underlying cause of the spots. You do more damage trying to squeeze blackheads as you can end up with nasty scarring which is much more difficult to treat.

Commenting on the video, a dermatologist told MailOnline that squeezing spots in this manner is not advised, as it can lead to scarring and red, inflamed skin.

Acne is a condition of the sebaceous glands and it usually starts in the teen years when the hormone androgen stimulates the sebaceous glands of the skin to enlarge, produce oil and plug the pores.

Acne pictures will clearly illustrate the difference between whiteheadsblackheads and pimples. A whitehead is the early stage of acne when the pore is plugged with oil and skin cells.

If this same plug reaches the surface of the skin, the air turns it black and we get a blackhead. If the wall of a plugged pore breaks, the surrounding area swells up and can turn into a red bump.

Both boy and girl teens get acne but it is often worse in boys because they produce 10 times as much androgen as girls and they tend to have more skin oils. But It is not only teens that suffer from acne. Acne can make an appearance during the twenties and for some, this can be the very first outbreak. Adult acne can be a recurrence of acne that cleared up after adolescence, a flare-up of acne for example during pregnancy or just occurring for the very first time.

Most teens will easily recognize the appearance of acne because they are used to seeing it on many of their friends' skins. But adults who suddenly develop this skin condition might need to see acne images before they realize that they are suffering from adult acne. So check out acne photos to compare with your own skin outbreaks and then start treatment as soon as possible.

Be very wary of what treatment you decide upon to treat your acne as some over-the-counter acne products have serious side effects such as skin irritation, burning or redness.

It can sometimes not occur in the teen years, or on the other hand persists all the way to the 30s, particularly in females. First, an increase in the androgen male hormone levels causes the epidermis to rapidly grow without shedding fast enough hyperkeratosis. The excess dead skin cells may cause a follicular plug which may trap sebum. In addition, the androgens and the progestogens one group of the female hormones to a lesser extent causes increased sebum production as discussed below.

Sebum is the oily substance secreted by the sebaceous glands and empties into the pilosebaceous ducts. It is necessary to moisturize the hair and skin to some extent. An overproduction causes the skin to become oily seborrhea. It further contributes to the follicular plug by causing dust from the environment to adhere to it. As the plug blocks the pore to a degree where sebum is trapped within the follicle and the attached sebaceous gland produces excessive quantities of sebum oilthe area may become inflamed.

Pimples papules are small solid lesions that form at this point. Deeper solid lesions are known as nodules. Severe inflammation often associated with bacteria causes the formation of superficial pustules or deeper cysts which are filled with pus.

Although not common, an abscess boil may form in severe cases when a large quantities of pus in the deeper layers of the skin gets walled off from surrounding healthy tissue. Acne tends to occur in the areas with more sebaceous glands — face, back and chest. This extends to the shoulders and can occur as low down as the buttocks.
